Police in Mityana District have arrested 20 suspected criminals in an intelligence-led security operation conducted in Kakindu Sub-county following growing public concern over increasing crime in the area.

The operation, carried out on June 16, 2026, targeted identified crime hotspots where suspected criminals were allegedly hiding and planning attacks against residents. The crackdown is part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to restore law and order and enhance public safety in the district.

According to Wamala Regional Police Spokesperson SSP Lameck Kigozi, residents had repeatedly raised concerns over rising cases of house break-ins, theft, mugging, property snatching, burglaries, cattle theft, and the abuse of narcotic substances, including marijuana and khat (mairungi).

“Following numerous complaints from members of the public, security agencies conducted an intelligence-led operation in areas believed to be harbouring criminals. The aim was to disrupt criminal networks and improve the security situation in Kakindu Sub-county,” SSP Kigozi said.

During the operation, police recovered several items suspected to be linked to criminal activities, including housebreaking tools and quantities of marijuana. Some of the suspects were reportedly found in possession of the recovered items.

Police said the suspects are being held at Mityana Central Police Station (CPS), where they are undergoing screening and verification to establish their possible involvement in criminal activities.

“Those found not to have any connection to criminal acts will be released. However, individuals against whom sufficient evidence is obtained will be charged and taken to court after the Resident State Attorney reviews and sanctions the case files,” SSP Kigozi explained.
